The legends and history of a tribe are transmitted through music and oral recitation. The Griot is the master musician; and it is a role that is greatly respected by the members of his tribe. Knowledge and musical training is passed down from father to son through the generations, and requires years of intense study. He must learn and commit to memory the vast history of the peoples of west Africa which extends over thousands of years. His traditional repertoire consists of musical and verbal recitations on such subjects as tribal conflicts, empires and kingdoms, cultural heroes, and family lineage. This can go on for many hours. Sometimes the performance is done in a spontaneous, extemporaneous way where he can sing about every-day events, perhaps praising someone for his generosity of some good neighborly deed. Of course, it is customary to reward the Griot for favors granted. Go to Online Store | Back to Top Paul Horn and Nexus- The Altitude of the Sun

Gypsy Jazz... swing music from a bygone era... played on violin, three guitars and string bass. From its origin in European Gypsy camps, during the mid - 1930s, gypsy jazz is the legacy of Django Reinhardt, Stephanie Grappelli and their band,, the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Recognized as a form of traditional jazz, most enthusiasts have forgotten how vital and youthful a force this music was during wartime occupied France. It symbolized the Resistance and all that was modern. The Nazis banned all jazz music and even publically burned Reinhardt and Grappelli's records. Instead of going into hiding, they became celebrities overnight. Their music flourished in the illegal dance halls and smoke-filled nightclubs of Paris. Today, the practitioners of this style are mainly European Gypsies, like the Ferre Brothers, Birelli Lagrene and Stochelo Rosenberg. However, a group of Americans, the Quintet of the Hot Club of San Francisco, plays the same instrumental format as the Reinhardt - Grappelli band; but with a fresh approach, new harmonic ideas and original compositions. This debut release by the QHCSF, coincides with a new surge of world-wide interest in the music of Django Reinhardt, while the master, Stephanie Grappelli, is still performing at the age of 86. The Quintet of the Hot Club of San Francisco, with a deep reverence for tradition, is playing music which is timeless in its message and is committed in keeping the flame alive.
